I'm Nathan Catania, a final year engineering student from Melbourne, Australia. I love technology and am very passionate about using it to make the world a better place.
High School Honour Student, turned University drop-out, turned University Honour Student.
I am currently working with Juniper Networks as an intern whilst completing my final year of study (Bachelor of Engineering) at RMIT University.
I also work for Telstra part-time; both in Sales and as a Technician, and volunteer as a mentor in a Year 8 maths class as part of the In2Science program, which aims to get kids attending school in low socioeconomic areas interested in STEM.
I can speak a few languages: mostly C++, Python, and a little Swift.
In my spare time I love to tinker, particularly with a Raspberry Pi, and am very interested in the areas of IoT, security and privacy.

inBin: IoT Anti-Littering System
3rd Year Design Project
inBin, a connected IoT anti-littering system, was developed for my 3rd year design project and was submitted to the 2016 Telstra University Challenge in which it placed 2nd.
inBin was created as a solution for Keep Australia Beautiful, and their need to drive an anti-littering culture throughout Australia.
inBin utilises a companion smartphone app in conjunction with Bluetooth LE beacons to reward people for disposing of litter thoughtfully. Additionally, sensors placed inside the bin collect information, such as fill-level, and display it on a web-based dashboard.

Infrastructure Communication System using SMS
I developed a system that would allow Nepal Water for Health (NEWAH) to monitor the status of various infrastructure projects in the remote regions of Nepal; where there is little technology or communications infrastructure present.
The design used SMS (Text Messaging) to transmit text based data across existing 2G cellular networks via basic “flip” mobile phones. Once sent, the data was then retrieved and processed by a remote server in one of the larger cities.

Role Model of the Year (Runner Up)
Nominated for the annual In2Science Role Model of the Year award for mentoring a Year 8 Mathematics class on a weekly basis, at a school underrepresented in STEM and in a low socioeconomic area.

Received an Academic Award from RMIT University for “inBin”, the IoT anti-littering system, that was designed for the Telstra University Challenge and a submitted for my 3rd Year Design Project.

1st Runner Up
Awarded 2nd place in the 2016 Telstra University Challenge for producing “inBin”, an IoT anti-littering solution, which was designed for the not-for-profit organization Keep Australia Beautiful.
One of two students awarded with a scholarship and a 6 month internship at Juniper Networks in Melbourne. This included the opportunity to participate in the annual Tech Summit in South Korea, in addition to JNCIA certification.
Seeds for the Future - Innovation and Technology Program
One of only 21 students selected nationally to participate in a 3-day program at Huawei in Sydney for high-achieving Engineering and ICT students. The program covered topics such as IoT, smart cities, and telecommunications.
Recognition of Academic Achievement
Received a letter from the head of the faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at RMIT University, acknowledging high and consistent academic achievement over the first 2 years of my degree.
